College Prep/SPARC

“Edgies has made me a more motivated person…The staff encouraged me to find my “fit” college and they guided me through the confusing college application process. They took me on college trips and would stay with me till 7 or 8 at night working on my college essays and financial aid applications.” — Christine, College Prep member who earned a scholarship that covered nearly all of her costs to Colby College.

We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to go to college.

Our College Prep and SPARC Programs ensure that underserved students in Downtown Manhattan have the resources and support to access college and to succeed once they’re there. Many of our teens are the first in their families to go to college.

In its first year:

  • 100% of our students who applied to college were accepted to at least one school
  • Our students scored an average 260 point increase on the SATs
  • The Posse Foundation awarded 3 of our teens with 4-year, full-tuition scholarships
  • The Charles Schwab Foundation and Boys & Girls Club awarded “Money Matters” Scholarships to several of our teens
  • Colby College awarded 1 full-tuition scholarship to one of our teens

  • One-on-one and small group academic advisement
  • SAT preparation course
  • Workshops on college preparation topics including applications, identifying colleges that are a good fit, essays, financial aid, and scholarships
  • College trips and visits from admissions officers to expose the teens to a broad range of colleges
  • Access to mentors and tutors
  • Early awareness activities to expose teens to a broad range of colleges including college visits, college fairs, visits from admissions officers, and panel discussions with recent college graduates

Our Students Pursuing Achievement and Readiness for College (SPARC) program is an enrichment program for middle school students that fosters an early awareness of the skills and attitudes necessary for high school and post-secondary education success.

As middle schoolers are at a crucial stage in which attitudes toward school and self are shaped, SPARC students participate in a wide variety of youth development activities that challenge and nourish the mind and body. Activities reinforce social, emotional, physical, and cognitive skills that and encourage a college-bound culture. SPARC students also build mentoring relationships with positive, compassionate adult role models.

SPARC operates on Saturdays for 5 hours during the school year, and three days a week during the summer.
